Engineers Day is a world-wide celebrated affair. The Engineers Day is celebrated to honor and acknowledge all the engineers who have and are still contributing their skills and knowledge to build a modern nation. As engineers play a vital role in the development of modern equipment that run a nation, the Engineers Day is commemorated as a gratitude to all those people who are in the occupational field of an Engineer.

Different countries celebrate the Engineers Day on different dates. In 1968, the Indian Government declared the birth anniversary of Sir. MV as Engineer’s Day. India celebrates its Engineers Day on the 15th of September, as a tribute to the Knighted Indian Engineer and Bharat Ratna figure, Sir Mokshagundam Viswesvaraya (popularly known as Sir. MV), who was an Indian Engineer and a prominent figure in the development of India.

Sir Mokshagundam Viswesvaraya was an excellent Indian engineer of historic India. He implemented an intricate system of irrigation in the Deccan Plateau and designed and patented a system of automatic weir water floodgates. Based on the success of these gates, the same system was installed at Tigra Dam in Gwalior and Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam in Mandya/Mysore, Karnataka. Sir Mokshagundam Viswesvaraya was called the "Father of Modern Mysore State" because of his magnificent contribution to the Mysore State. During his service with the Government of the Mysore state, he was responsible for the founding of Mysore Soap Factory, Parasitoid Laboratory, Mysore Iron & Steel Works in Bhadravathi, Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic Bangalore, Bangalore Agricultural University, the State Bank of Mysore, Century Club, Mysore Chamber of Commerce, the Apex Chamber of Commerce in Karnataka, University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering and numerous other industrial places.

Sir Mokshagundam Viswesvaraya was also knighted by King George V of the British Indian Empire as a Knight Commander for his contributions to the public good. Along with a knighthood, Sir MV also received the Bharat Ratna in 1995.

His birthday is celebrated as Engineers Day not only in India but also in Sri Lanka and the United Republic of Tanzania.
