Hindi Diwas is celebrated in India on the 14th of September every year. It is an event put forward by the Government of India to mark the day when Hindi was selected as the national language of India in 1949. Hindi Diwas not only marks the recognition of the Hindi language as our national language, it also signifies the importance and strength of our National Language. Hindi Diwas was first officially celebrated on the 14th of September, 1953 by the consideration of the Jawaharlal Nehru Government and has been celebrated in India ever since, giving light to the sovereignty of our national language.
As India is the home-ground for numerous varieties of different cultures and languages, the language of Hindi allows people of different cultural backgrounds to interact with each other, hence unifying them under a single nation, India. The Hindi language is also a significant part of Indian history. Hindi was developed in India, around the 7th-8th Century in present day Northern-India by the Middle Indo-Aryan community. Originally known as the Hindustani language, it emerged as a contact language during the rule of the Delhi Sultanate which ruled India for over 320 years. This language eventually gave India the name of ‘Hindustan’, before it was given the English name of ‘India’ during the British rule.
During the drafting of the Indian Constitution, there was a huge confusion on the issue of the National Language of India. As India contains hundreds of languages and thousands of dialects, the recognition of a National Language out of these dialects was a tough choice. As a result, Hindi was selected as the Official National Language of India in 1949 while English was considered as an associate national language for 15 years. In 1965, when the 15 years was up, the Indian government announced that English would continue to be the "de facto formal language of India” after the riots that took place in Southern India, following the removal of the English Language from the constitution of India.
