The International Day of Peace or World Peace Day is an internationally sanctioned holiday celebrated on the 21st of September every Year in order to raise awareness on the tranquility and serenity of peace. War and violence destroys the world and the lives present in it. The International Peace Day is particularly dedicated to World Peace and the importance of absence of war and violence all around the world. Celebrated globally, the world peace day acts as a resistant force against the brutality and atrocity of war and violence. This day highlights the urgency of the societal friendship and harmony present in peace, marking the disturbing feature present in War and Violence.

The International Day of Peace was first celebrated by the United Nations in 1981 to mark the tragedy and disasters of War and to strengthen the ideals of Peace. It was initially decided by the UN that the World Peace Day was to be celebrated on the third Tuesday of September every year. But in 2001, it was changed to the 21st of September, as a result of the 9/11 attacks that took place that year. Coincidently, the attacks that took place on September 9 was on the very same day of International Peace Day that year. Therefore, the UN declared the World Peace Day to be celebrated on the 21st of September every year in 2011.

Every year, on the 21st of September, the United Nations Peace Bell is rung in order to inaugurate the celebrations. The UN Peace Bell is a special bell, which was a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan, that is cast from coins donated by children from all over the world (except Africa), which was done in order to remember the ‘human cost of war’. The inscription on the side of the bell reads ‘Long Live Absolute World Peace’.

Every year, the United Nations assigns various themes for the International Day of Peace. The 2022 theme for International World Peace Day is ‘End Racism. Build Peace’.
